How to recover lost dashboard settings & shortcuts

Did your start page reset to the default layout, with your custom shortcuts, widgets or background gone? In most cases you can get your most recent setup back. Here's exactly how.

Dayblaster saves your page in three places that can each act as a recovery point: an automatic cloud version history (when you're signed in), a local backup file you can download any time, and the local storage of each browser you've used. Try them in this order.

Method 1 — Restore from cloud version history (best)

If you were signed in to a free account, Dayblaster automatically kept timestamped versions of your page.

  1. Open Dayblaster and click the account icon (the person icon at the top of the page).
  2. Make sure you're signed in with the same email or Google account you used before.
  3. Under “Restore an earlier version”, open the list and pick a date and time from before your settings were lost.
  4. Click Restore. Your page reloads with that version — and your current page is snapshotted too, so nothing is lost.
Tip: pick the newest version that still has your customizations. If the very latest one already looks like the default, step back one or two versions.

Method 2 — Restore from a backup file

If you ever clicked “Download backup”, you have a file that restores everything.

  1. Open the settings panel (where you change the background).
  2. Click Restore backup.
  3. Choose your dayblaster-backup.json file — it's usually in your Downloads folder.
  4. The page reloads with the settings from that file.

Method 3 — Recover from another browser or device

Your customizations are stored separately in every browser you've used. If Dayblaster still shows your setup somewhere else, you can rescue it from there.

  1. Open Dayblaster in the other browser or on the other device.
  2. Before signing in, open settings and click Download backup to save that copy.
  3. Bring that file to your main browser and use Method 2 to restore it.

Why did this happen?

A start page can reset to default for a few reasons:

Signing in to a free account is the fix for all of these: your page syncs to the cloud and keeps an automatic version history you can always roll back to.
